ASBMR Webinar Series: Bench to Bedside and Back Again: Diabetes and Skeletal Health
Join Teresita Bellido, Ph.D. and Nicola Napoli, M.D., Ph.D., as they present a basic and clinical perspective on the topic of diabetes and skeletal health.

Drs. Napoli and Bellido will present current knowledge on the effects of diabetes on the skeleton in patients and animals models and discuss potential underlying mechanisms of disease and clinical evidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients; and on the effect of anabolic treatments.

As a result of this webinar participants will be able to:
1. Learn what are the effects of diabetes on the skeleton in humans.
2. Review in vitro and ex vivo approaches to study the mechanisms of action of diabetes on bone cells.
3. Discuss in vivo results using preclinical animal models.

Speakers

Teresita Bellido, Ph.D.
@University of Arkansas
Dr. Bellido’s research focuses on signal transduction in bone cells, with emphasis on osteocyte biology and the direct action of hormones on bone cells. Past contributions elucidated the mechanisms of action of sex steroids, PTH, glucocorticoids, bisphosphonates, and mechanical stimuli in the regulation of bone remodeling and bone cell apoptosis. She currently leads studies on the mechanisms by which PTH, Notch signaling, and canonical Wnt signaling regulate bone homeostasis through actions on osteocytes; on the mechanism of action of excess of glucocorticoids in bone and muscle; and on the role of osteocyte-derived factors in diabetes. As a long-standing volunteer leader for the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), she served as chair of the Education committee and the Women in Bone and Mineral Research committee, and organized mentoring and career development sessions. Dr. Bellido is the immediate Past-President of ASBMR (2018-2021).
Nicola Napoli, M.D., Ph.D.
@University of Rome
Dr. Nicola Napoli is an Associate Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome in Italy and also works with Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in the United States. His research focus is on pathophysiology and treatment of osteoporosis as well as bone fragility in diabetic reactions. Dr. Napoli is the former chairman of the ASBMR Membership Engagement Committee, and currently serves as an ASBMR Ambassador.
